Gold Aurene was the first decorative iridescent colored glass produced at the Steuben Glass Works. In the 1890's while still at Stevens & Williams, Carder had become intrigued by the golden and rainbow-colored iridescence on Roman glass of the First to Fourth centuries A. On ancient glass such iridescence is caused by a partial disintegration of the glass surface through the action of chemicals in the soil in which it was buried. Carder experimented for years with methods of producing a similar effect and was ready to produce iridescent glass when he came to America. Name Aurene was coined from the first three letters of, aurum, the Latin word for gold, combined with the last three letters of, schene, the Middle English form of sheen, which describes the gold sheen of the glass.

The velvety-soft iridescence of this glass was a remarkable technical achievement.
